Chi Onwurah Parliamentary Written Questions and Answers on Cellular IOT Modules

Written Question to DSIT on Manufacturing Industries: Telecommunications

Chi Onwurah (Shadow Minister for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy): To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, if she will make an assessment of the potential implications for his policies of the level of dependency of the manufacturing sector on Chinese companies for cellular internet-of-things modules; and whether she is taking steps to help reduce that dependency. (Asked on 28 February 2023)

Paul Scully (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, DSIT): The Government is monitoring the security threats unique to cellular internet-of-things modules. We have already taken action to ensure that emerging security threats relating to consumer IoT products can be addressed through the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 and will introduce further security requirements using the powers in this Act as necessitated by the evolving threat landscape.
